Aim

Paddle effectively and safely on inland waterways and bodies of water including creeks, rivers, lakes, lagoons, estuaries, canals that are not wider than 1 km, with no swell or breaking waves.

Location

Inland waterways and bodies of water including creeks, rivers, lakes, lagoons, estuaries, canals that are no wider than 1 km
Flat water with no swell or breaking waves
No wind. Or wind less than 12 knots (12 kms per hour)
Away from river mouths that have strong currents out to sea
 

Pre-requisites

Swim 50 metres, without stopping
 

Outcomes

Understand the enclosed flat water environment
Identify SUP hazards
Choose a safe SUP location
Enter and exit the water correctly
Paddle in standing position with balance and confidence
Paddle in kneeling position with balance and confidence
Demonstrate correct method to change direction
Demonstrate correct paddling technique
Demonstrate safe wipe-out and dismount
Demonstrate correct SUP etiquette
Choose suitable board and equipment
Identify self rescue techniques and when to apply them
Identify how to care for the SUP environment

Demonstrate SUP manoeuvres:    

·       back paddling right

·       back paddling left

·       sweep stroke

·       side stroke turn

·       step back pivot turn

·       toe side pivot turn

·       heel side pivot turn

·       stopping
